Print then Paint

The beauty of reduction printmaking is that you destroy the plate as you carve it. You cannot go back and make changes or revise your idea. The possibilities for print variety and color combinations are endless but the image doesn’t change. Once the plate is carved, the imagery is decided. I can’t make more prints, I can’t change old layers.

My print then paint series is an opportunity to explore process, revision, and new ideas in an otherwise completed thought. Once a print is finished, I take one from the series and stick it to a board. Oil paint allows me to create something new from an otherwise finished thought.
